Share your memories of Kate

Kate loved helping people from all walks of life – not only in professional settings but also in unexpected places.

The heavens opened up to welcome an Angel back home. Andrew, Chris, Thomas and Megan please accept my sincere condolences. Kate loved you all very much as can be seen in the photo's you've shared. I was honored to call Kate my friend. She continuously amazed me with her strength and determination, courage and love. She literally made the world a better place. Fortunately for the world, all of her hard work and many gifts of knowledge and passion of helping others will continue through her books, on-line interviews and courses. I think this ability to continue to share her abundance of knowledge would have made Kate happy. I will forever cherish and be grateful for my friendship with Kate.

I am so deeply saddened to hear of Kate’s passing. We feel so lucky to have had the opportunity to get to know Kate through our shared projects. She inspired so many people including myself and our Plant-Based Canada family through her work and the incredible role model she was of personal strength, agency, compassion, kindness, generosity, and a life of purpose given in service to others. Sending much love to Kate’s family.

Kate was a woman of courage and caring. She fought adversity due to health issues with determination, always researching with a strong spirit. Throughout her life she willingly provided counselling and education to all who crossed her path. A natural helper unafraid to face difficult situations! She definitely could provide unique analogies to help clients’ understandings. These just seemed to “roll off her tongue”.
Her family meant so much to her and especially her “right hand man” Andrew, who always stood by her. This is a big loss to all who knew Kate. May you rest in peace, Kate. You will certainly be missed by many in various walks of life.
Your work with Family School Liaison People will not be forgotten.

Kate’s kindness, compassion, and fighting spirit have touched so many people. She was a giver - the ultimate cheerleader, driven to helping others. I cherish the many fond memories I have of helping Kate with Fork Smart summits and local potlucks. I will always remember her passion and knowledge for the whole food plant-based lifestyle, along with her diligence and tirelessness in promoting its life-altering benefits, something she experienced first-hand. I will miss Kate’s friendship but I am a better person for having known her, and for that, I am truly grateful.

I met Kate through her work with Fork Smart. She was such a kind, generous, capable and caring person. She did so much good with her whole food plant based work, but also by sharing the Acceptance Commitment Therapy approach to help people. I will always remember her warm smile and calm reassuring voice.

I have so many fond memories of Kate but will never forget when we first connected. My family and I were following a strict plant based diet to help combat serious disease at the time which was isolating and lonely. When I first met Kate, we talked for hours. She was kind, knowledgeable, and open about her journey and gave us so much support and inspiration. My family and I were so amazed by her energy and relentless drive to help people. I was so blessed to have known her and work with her on the Forksmart summits as well as take in all her wisdom and advice on all our personal challenges during the years we knew her. We are still shocked and so sad that she is no long physically here but will always remember our times together. Thank you Kate for everything you are and all the seeds of change you planted.

I had a few consultation sessions with Kate.
I was dealing with health challenges, feeling frustrated and hopeless. Kate’s mentorship gave me hope and inspired positive thinking at a lowest point in my life.
I enjoyed our talks and admired her passion for helping people.
My deepest condolences. Thoughts and prayers are with her and her family.

I always enjoyed Kate's positive outlook on life. One of my fondest memories of Kate was working with her in planning an event for the Alberta College of Social Workers for Social Work Week. Social work can bring a lot of heaviness with it and Kate had the idea to base our event around happiness. The event was complete with people being able to take home items that made them happy, a sing and dance along to the song Happy, and Kate sharing her wisdom with participants about her perspective on happiness. Thank you Kate for that. I am keeping you and your family close to my heart right now. <3

We are heartbroken to learn of Kate’s sudden passing. Kate and Andrew were instrumental in teaching and supporting us as we transitioned to a plant-based lifestyle. Kate’s passion for health and caring teaching style drew us to her. Sending my sincere condolences to Andrew and the family.
Shortly after I adopted a plant-based lifestyle I was looking for a group to meet with to support my new journey. Forksmart was the perfect fit. Kate was always so kind and made sure that all were welcome at her Potluck and Annual Forksmart events. I was so inspired by Kate’s energy, kindness and how much she gave back in spite of what she was dealing with.
A special lady who will not be forgotten.

Kate and I met when we were both learning about the ACT Matrix, a tool that she started to use in her counseling. Kate was so kind and helpful to me and we even did a CROWDCAST together. I’m so very sorry for your loss. I will always remember Kate fondly!

My sincerest condolences to you, Andrew, and to the rest of your family. Kate had a kind heart, full of caring for others, and such an inspirational story about how diet can change a life. It was so special to enjoy some lovingly prepared plant-based meals hosted at your house which facilitated learning and connection for my family. The ForkSmart events she organized were so educational and helpful. I will always remember volunteering alongside Kate at those events fondly.
May God feel close to you all as you walk through your grief. And may the happiest of memories you have together help to comfort you now and in the coming days, weeks and months. If there is anything I can do to help you, please do reach out. Your family is in my prayers.

I am feeling sad of knowing that Kate is not more with us, she is going to be remembered for all of the people that she inspired, as a dedicated giver.

What a tragic loss for Kate's family, for the plant-based community, and for the world. I met Kate when my husband and I moved to Calgary in 2019. I was amazed by her dedication, generosity, and commitment to the plant-based world. She was an extraordinary woman, with more strength and courage than most of us could imagine in one person. I am deeply saddened by her loss, and wish her family love and strength during this very difficult time. Kate will never be forgotten.

I first met Kate when she came to a writers group that I had set up. She instantly impacted me with her energy and excitement. We later connected again when she was doing the annual plant-based easting seminars. I was so inspired by Kate's positivity and creativity. She was so powerful in being able to provide new perspective and she was so human in her experience of life. I cannot say how disheartened I am that this beautiful light has left our world. I will be inspired by you for the rest of my life, Kate. Thank you for being a part of my life.

I have been a client of Kate’s for several years. She was sensitive, practical, and a beacon of light. She had a special gift to make people feel competent and special. I will miss her tremendously. My thoughts and prayers are with her family and all those she touched on her journey here.

Oh, I am heart-broken to hear this news. Kate made such a difference in my life after I was diagnosed with restrictive lung disease. I contacted her after seeing her in the Forks Over Knives movie. I followed her path to plant based wellness with her friendship and support. She made such a difference in our lives. What an irreplaceable loss. ♡
—  Gayle Ayres
Kate was a mentor and a friend. Not only someone I looked up to professionally but personally as well. Her gentle leadership and fearless spirit are what I will remember most. She cared deeply for people and wanted to make a difference. I will fondly remember the hours we spent brainstorming new innovative ideas to help people live healthier lives, setting up the basement space for filming while Jake ate my pant bottoms, Christmas dinner were you spoiled us all with gifts and delicious food, and us sitting around trying to figure out social media together. Love you Kate and sending love to Andrew and the kids.
—  Andrea Sereda
Kate came into my life during a time of big change. We met as colleagues and quickly became friends. I have fond memories of organizing events, working on business initiatives, sharing meals, and chatting for hours about so many things! Kate loved helping others and I am grateful to have received so much love and encouragement from our friendship - I hope she knows just how much she was respected and appreciated.
Sending my sincerest condolences to all those who were touched by her warmth and charm ❤️

Kate saved me. I was at such a low and felt totally paralyzed about what to do. I am so glad and lucky I had the chance to meet her, which is probably why it felt so bad to hear the news of her passing. I am sorry for the loss to her family. I didn't have a specific memory to share, just that she really made me feel listened to and valuable. I'll really miss her.

💜💜💜💜💜💜The person that I am today is in BIG BIG part thanks to Kate. She helped me enormously in different areas on my life: The job that I have currently since 6 years ago was thanks to Kate's mentorship on how to do interviews and how to land my dream job. Thanks to her knowledge my whole family became plant based, including my two pregnancies and therefore my kids, my mom back home reverted Diabetes and husband and brother and aunt we are all plant based thanks to her.
I had postpartum anxiety and I was in a very dark moment in my life and then again one more time Kate gave me lots of hope and helped me go through this path and eventually my recovery.
She was an amazing and passionate human being. She touched my life so deeply and I am going to miss her lots.
One strange thing that I wanted to mention is that I googled her to find out news about her on October 20th, never found anything and continue with my day, only to find out days later that was the day she suddenly passed. I'm so happy to hear she didn't have to suffer and it was a very quick transition of life.
I love you Kate and I always will. Gracias Gracias y Gracias. 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜

I first met Kate at a presentation she arranged with Caldwell Esselstyn at the Peter Lougheed Hospital. We took the afternoon off from the office to go see the presentation. I remember Dr. Esselstyn pulling up a chair with me for half an hour after the presentation answering a multitude of questions. I still inform people about what I learned from that meeting, but I was astounded at Kate's health recovery story which she related that day. I subsequently went to another meeting that she had arranged with various speakers, bringing along one of my daughters. My daughter became a vegan from that day forward, and she subsequently influenced my other daughter, who is now a vegetarian. Although I only met Kate several times, her stories and meetings have impacted my family and career on a daily basis. I am so saddened and surprised to hear of her sudden passing. I am sure that she has helped and impacted more people than we will ever know. My heart felt condolences goes out to her family, and my enduring gratitude goes out to Kate. God bless.
